ABOUT

MJ Newsom is a play-by-play broadcaster and currently the Voice of the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens in Claremont, California. A native of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, he chose to attend the University of Southern California to pursue a career in sports broadcasting, hoping to achieve a dream that eight year old him might've believed was impossible.
MJ grew up in Vestavia Hills, a suburb of Birmingham, where he was quickly faced with an Alabamian's biggest decision: Tide or Tigers? Thankfully, he sided with Alabama, which helped blossom his love for sports. Six national championships sure didn't hurt, either. It also put him in front of the TV on Saturdays, and he quickly grew an affinity for the work of those putting on the headsets in the booth, often muting the television to provide his own commentary. Even in attendance at Bryant-Denny Stadium, MJ would put the radio in one ear, waiting for Eli Gold to yell an iconic "touchdown, Alabama!"
Following a concussion that made him choose basketball and baseball over playing football heading into high school, his falls were wide open, leading him to get involved in Vestavia Hills High School's Sports Broadcasting Club as a sophomore. From PA at JV football games to play-by-play under the Friday Night Lights as a senior, MJ knew he wanted to chase this dream. Spreading his wings, he ended up on the other side of the country in sunny Los Angeles.
Under the direction of some older student mentors, MJ got plugged into KXSC, USC's student radio station. Throughout college, MJ earned his stripes at KXSC, calling USC football, basketball, and baseball, worked on Pac 12+ and Big Ten+ broadcasts, and held two summer baseball internships, calling games for the Tri-City Chili Peppers and the Falmouth Commodores. After his senior year, he was honored as a First Team All-American by STAA, named one of the top six collegiate broadcasters nationwide by industry professionals.
When he's not calling a game, watching/listening to other broadcasts, or preparing for his next call, MJ enjoys working out, building dynasties in EA College Football, hanging out with friends, and working to actively grow in his faith in Jesus Christ, who makes all things possible.
